Ararat Memorial Fountain restoration is underway

The Ararat Memorial Fountain restoration is well underway in front of the Ararat Town Hall. The project will require intricate and complex plumbing.

Art conservator Andrew Thorn of Artcare was recently on site to oversee the restoration.

Ararat Rural City Council CEO Dr Tim Harrison said Exell Plumbing’s Darrell Juchno is working carefully with Mr Thorn to restore the plumbing system.

Dr Harrison said parts of the fountain have had to be temporarily removed to allow for the plumbing work to occur.

“The work requires careful heritage conservation methods, which are quite complex and intricate so the people working on site are taking their time to ensure it is done correctly,” he said.

Mr Thorn will be conducting repair work on the decorative features, including gryphons, dolphins and grotesque masks on the fountain.

Mr Thorn is also experimenting with different colours to ensure the fountain is repainted to its original sandstone tone.

“We are really looking forward to seeing the fountain working again and we know the community is too,” Dr Harrison said.

It is believed that the fountain project will be finished within the next four months.
