Ararat College student Ella Wood played her first game with the Western Bulldogs in the VFLW on Saturday afternoon against NT Thunder.
The Bulldogs won 13.13 (91) to 2.1 (13) at Ballarat’s Mars Stadium, the score was the highest of any team in the 2019 VFLW season to date.
Wood told AC News that she enjoyed the opportunity to play with senior female players after recently representing Victoria Country at a week-long championship in Queensland.
“There was a lot of the AFL girls playing so it was a really great experience. The skill level is a lot better, quicker pace,” she said.
“I was extremely nervous (beforehand) but once I got my hands on the footy it was just excitement.”
Ararat College Acting Principal Ellie McDougall congratulated Wood on her ongoing achievements with football.
“As a school, we are extremely proud of Ella playing her first game in the VFLW league. All her hard work is paying off, it’s fantastic to see her grow as a player,” she said.
Acting Assistant Principal Jessica Erhardt watched the game on Saturday and also expressed her congratulations.
The Bulldogs have the bye next weekend and will return to the field to face Essendon at VU Whitten Oval on Saturday 10 August.
“I’ll find out next Thursday if I am playing in the next game,” Wood said.
