Ararat Football-Netball Club’s junior teams – both under 14s and under 17s – went into yesterdays Wimmera League Grand Final quietly confident but couldn’t come away with wins in the end.
The under 14s played Horsham Demons and were behind throughout the game, trailing by 35 points at half time, 30 at three-quarter time, then closing the margin to 16 by the final siren.
Sonny Kettle kicked three of Ararat’s goals, alongside Darcy Aitken, Aaron Chaplin and Jim Jennings who all kicked one.
Ararat’s best players were Sonny Kettle, Xavier Mcloughlan, Sam Allgood, Brady Weppner and Tyler Moana.
The under 17s have had a fantastic season, finishing on top of the ladder with just one loss. Yesterday’s battle against the Horsham Saints didn’t end how they’d hoped, with the Saints taking home the trophy by 27 points.
Ararat didn’t score in the first quarter which gave the Saints a head start, but by half time things were looking closer with 8 points between them.
However, the Saints ran away with it in the third, 20-59, and the Rats couldn’t do the same in the final quarter – even with the wind on their side. The final score was 5.2-32 to 9.5-59.
Ryan Weppner kicked three of Ararat’s goals, whilst Jordan Cox and Ethan Summers both kicked one.
Alexander Van Opstal, Brenton Lewis, Luke Spalding, Jordan Cox, Charlie Preston and Jeziah Woods were named as Ararat’s best.
Ararat’s under 17 netball team lost their grand final game by 10 goals to Dimboola, 50-40.
The C Grade game was even closer, Ararat lost by just three goals to Horsham Demons, 30-27.
Reserves were the only team to come away with a win, leading throughout their match before winning by 29 points against Horsham Demons.
