Ararat Storm pull together open age team for 2020

Ararat Storm Girls Football Club’s future is looking brighter, as the club starts to recover from a difficult 2019 season. A lack of interest meant the club had to fold earlier this year but a recent burst of campaigning has gained interest for 2020.

Club Secretary Sandy Burton said they now have an open age team as people continue to make contact with the club. Interest for under 15s and under 18s teams has not been as strong, but the club is remaining hopeful.

She said that they need six more players for an under 18 side to play next year and they are getting more interest each week. They are not ruling out the under 15s and under 18s just yet.

The club has recently put in an application to join the Goldfields League but the result is not yet clear. Burton isn’t holding her breath but said discussions will be held between the DUFFL and Goldfields League in the coming weeks.

“We’ve put an application into Goldfields but we are not 100% sure we’ll get it,” Burton said.

“It’s a better league for the women and it’s stronger, whereas the DUFFL league is only new and there’s not as much competition. It has its positives, it will build, but it has more negatives at the moment.”

The club is currently in discussions to determine their new home, with talks currently underway between both the Ararat Rats and Ararat Eagles about options for 2020.

“We are unsure if we are going to merge with a football club or stick as our own at this stage,” she said.

“I think we are leaning towards merging because we will have a bit of a backup and netballers that might be interested. We’ve spoken to the Eagles and the Rats.”

“We’ve just got to come up with a meeting and find out if that’s what we want to do and who we want to go with, and that’s going to be sometime at the start December.”

Burton said the club is also seeking expressions of interest to fill the role of coach.

“We need to advertise for a coach. We have an offer from one guy, but we have got to do the proper thing and advertise,” she said.

The coach needs to be at least level 1 accredited and be aware of different skill levels, game knowledge, and be able to plan games and run training.

If anyone is wanting to officially apply for the coaching position, send an email to araratstorm@hotmail.com or message their Facebook Page. An announcement regarding their 2020 coach will be made at the start of December.
